Day 6: Munich
If you have read our adventures from yesterday, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that we didn't get up any too early. We did manage to make it to the breakfast provided at the hotel though. At 8 euros a person, it was a bargain. Ken is more of a breakfast person than I am but that didn’t stop me from chowing down greedily on the fresh fruit and delicious whole grain breads. I cannot say enough good about this little hotel. We just loved it. Ken got to chatting with the clerk who had checked us in and he told Ken that the hotel has been family owned and run for over 100 years. Everything was just perfect. Our room had just been remodeled and pretty much anything you could ask for to make you comfortable was furnished. There was a lovely little courtyard where you could sit and read or enjoy a snack. There were flowers everywhere. I just loved the place--and if we find anything better on this whole trip, I will be astonished!
The clerk gave us a little map to the train station and we found it was really only about a 7-8 minute walk (maybe even less--I never thought to time it). We headed there after breakfast, and caught the subway back into Munich where we found our HOHO for the day.
I must say, I was not impressed. The city of Munich has some very beautiful areas, but the HOHO doesn’t do very well with featuring them. You sort of whiz by, the commentary is lackluster, and the stops are not well defined. We had arrived a bit late, too, so we really couldn't do much stopping as we could have been left in the middle of the city somewhere with no more buses coming by as the HOHO schedule would have ended. We did go around a couple times, and then decided to get off and walk. We had passed some lovely gardens with fountains, but since the HOHO hadn’t really defined the stops for them, we decided to walk and try to find them ourselves. Which we did. I am sure Munich is a much nicer city than we experienced, and it isn’t fair to judge it on the several hours we gave it.
We were planning a trip to see the famed Mad King Ludwig castle the next day, but couldn’t figure out how to find the place to sign up for it. Finally, after a lot of asking people, we were directed to the Tourist Information center which was, thankfully, quite near the train station as my feet were once again screaming that they needed to stop. We were helped by an absolutely wonderful woman, who sold us our tickets and spent time helping us figure out what subway we needed to take to get back to Aubing. We had a very nice meal (Mexican burrito) at the train station and it was delicious! We then headed home (without incident thankfully) and went to bed as we had to be back at the tour stop by 8 a.m. the next morning.
End of Day 6
The famous "Walking Man"
Hey, they even named a street after me--and it's one of the main streets too!
Look at all that chocolate! We didn't buy any!
